If eco travel interests you, you should definitely be paying attention now. The reason? I have found the most sustainable hotel in all of Europe! The name is Landgut Stober and it’s located just North of Berlin, Germany. Welcome to a hotel, where history and the future of tourism melts together.
Organic and fair-trade
Nestling in the midst of Brandenburg’s lush green landscape and only an hour’s drive from Berlin, Landgut Stober offers what most urbanites dream of; quietness and stunning nature. The property was once known as ‘Landgut A. Borsig’ (‘Langut’ meaning property and A. Borsig the name of the former family owning it), but today, the couple Anja and Michael Stober has taken over the property and turned it into a conference hotel and popular wedding venue.
The red brick buildings from the mid 19th Century were once accommodating stables, a distillery and a granary; a well-run enterprise with many employees. One can still feel the presence of history quite strongly when entering the cobbled courtyard, but apart from that, a modern business – and a modern way of thinking – has taken over.
Landgut Stober has been nominated best German hotel conference venue and most sustainable conference & event hotel in 2015 and 2016, and it also takes the title as one of Europe’s most sustainable hotels. Still, one has to really experience it to understand why. Let me give you a quick overview: the hotel houses 105 double rooms with rainwater collection systems in all bathrooms (yes, this means that the toilet flushes rainwater!) and wood heating. Furthermore, most products used in the hotel are fair-trade. While all this is certainly brilliant, my favorite part still had to be the organic beds with mattresses from COCO-MAT! Made of organic cotton, seaweed and coconut, these beds are like the Ferrari’s of mattresses! Obviously, I slept like a baby during my stay.
The spacious surroundings are perfect for conferences and weddings, but also private guests can enjoy the offers of the hotel. Take for example the gastronomical aspect; the popular restaurant of Seeterrassen, from where you have a direct view to the lake and garden. Only seasonal and local ingredients are used here, which makes the experience both interesting and genuine. Round off the evening with a glass of wine in the wine cellar. Next morning you’ll wake up to a fair trade breakfast with local specialities.
Landgut Stober is not your average hotel for a weekend get-away, but if you’re into green travel and wish to support the environment, this is the place to be! It’s conveniently close to Berlin, but you’ll need a car to get here.
I already look forward to returning to this natural gem next time I need a serious dose of relaxation and rejuvenation.
