The Charles Hotel, Munich: the experience
During my recent trip to Munich I had the pleasure of visiting The Charles Hotel, which by the way isn’t just another five star hotel. Built on the site of the former university library and facing the old botanical garden, this hotel is perfectly located if you’re looking for a quiet yet central spot in the buzzing city. The Charles opened in 2007 as part of the exclusive Rocco Forte chain, which is family owned. In fact, The Charles is named after the father of Sir Rocco Forte, who was an renowned hotelier.
With 136 rooms and 24 suites, the hotel isn’t a small, cosy boutique hotel, but it’s certainly fulfilling the needs of guests wanting the very best. An Italian restaurant, Davvero, serves authentic delicacies for lunch and dinner while the bar is the place to go for afternoon tea and pre-dinner cocktails. And when you’re done with all that, why not pay the spa a visit? Guests will find a broad range of treatments and spa facilities in a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere.
Upon our arrival we had the pleasure of enjoying a ‘Giardino Lunch’ in the restaurant. A light business lunch perfect for business people and other travelers on the go. We chose the antipasti buffet as a starter and moved on to what would appear to be the best duck I’ve had for ages! Everything was rounded off with coffee and home made petit fours.
After the lunch experience it was time for us to enjoy a couple of hours in the spa, which by the way houses the largest indoor hotel pool in Munich. Prepare for a quite extensive spa menu if you opt for a treatment – not that you have to though, cause the spa itself is more than enough if you just want to unwind and relax. If you still want to give it a go, there’s treatments for both men, women, kids and teenagers, and the menu offers anything from detox therapy to pedicure, tropical massages and pregnancy packages. It’s fair to say that no guests leave the spa without being 100% relaxed.
The Charles Hotel is a great option for especially business travelers and couples craving a little more on their vacation. The location allows guests to walk almost anywhere without the hazzle; from the Central station to the city centre and beyond. I will definitely return for a dip in the pool….
