I always love a good spa getaway, so when the chance to visit A-ROSA Travemünde in Northern Germany came up, I was more than happy to go! The hotel is very close to Denmark and works perfectly as a weekend getaway for couples and families.
A spa sanctuary
Travemünde is located in the Northernmost part of Germany, only half an hour’s drive from the historical city of Lübeck (which you have probably heard of if you’re a fan of Christmas markets like me 😉 The town has been a seaside resort since 1802 and is home to the largest ferry port in Germany with connections to Sweden, Finland, Russia, Latvia and Estonia. Furthermore, Travemünde has a pretty lighthouse dating back to 1539, which makes it one of the oldest in Germany. So far, so good. But what else can you see there? The local spa heaven A-ROSA, of course.
A-ROSA is a German hotel chain with four hotels and all of their properties are spacious and family-friendly. It’s not traditional luxury, but modern comfort and well-being for the entire family; a market, which is definitely expanding on a global scale.
After nearly 3 hours of driving, my family and I could check in (this was my toddler’s first stay in a hotel!) and the explorations could begin. The hotel is quite large; 191 rooms and suites, three restaurants and even a kids club. But the most impressive part is the spa area that comprises 4.500 m2 (!) divided between two floors. The ‘SPA-ROSA’ is the obvious reason why you’d wanna go here. You might not necessarily be a fan of huge spa’s, but if you are – this is the place to be! Think of a true wellness sanctuary offering all sorts of treatments and spa facilities. You can check in to the thalasso centre, which pays tribute to the surrounding sea. As the website states; “The sea is the source of all life. It’s no wonder then, that we have a close connection to it”. I love the idea of using the sea as a natural healer and beautifier! Guests wanting to spend a little extra on wellness, can book a spa suite for the day. Oh, and that obviously also includes swimming in the heated outdoor pool.
An active lifestyle
In summer, Travemünde turns into a paradise for vacation seekers. The beach is located just a stone’s throw from the hotel, so just imagine doing a little morning yoga there – or what about renting a sail boat for the day? Others go swimming, horse riding or playing tennis. There are plenty of options to choose from.
I was pleasantly surprised by the rooms, which were both light, spacious and with killer views to the Baltic Sea. I couldn’t get my arms down when I heard that we had been upgraded to a Juniorsuite Penthouse (yes, it was just as nice as it sounds!) The room itself is approx. 38 m2, and even though there’s a sofa bed, I wouldn’t recommend more than two people staying there. However, for two people, it’s just perfect. Unfortunately, it was a bit too cold for us to enjoy the rooftop terrace to the fullest, but I could only imagine how lovely it would be in summer! You can choose between seven different room categories at A-ROSA Travemünde.
No spa hotel without a restaurant offering healthy, fresh food! This is obviously also the case here, where guests can choose to dine in not only one, but two restaurants. One being the Wintergarten, which offers a very large buffet catering for both adults and children. If you want a more memorable (and calm) dining experience, the Michelin-restaurant of Buddenbrooks is just next door. Chef Dirk Seiger enhances the traditional French cuisine by adding Asian and oriental elements. Breakfast is served in the Wintergarden, which also houses a beautiful sun terrace.
My own son was obviously too young to try out all the entertainment offers for children, so I can only imagine him at the age of 5, building sand castles, swimming or reading by the pool. Perhaps we should return at some point – just to get the full A-ROSA experience. I’m already looking forward!
A-ROSA Travemünde in short:

- Three restaurants (including one Michelin star)
- 4.500 m2 spa
- Kids Club
- Located approx. one hour’s drive from Hamburg and 30 min’s from Lübeck
