Copenhagen is the ideal destination for a weekend getaway – not too big and full of cosy cafes, hotels and restaurants. One of these hotels is the charming Kong Arthur, owned by the same family since 1989 and located on a quiet street close to the city centre. With a spa and several restaurants around the corner, it’s the perfect destination for a weekend stay!
An oasis in the city
Hotel Kong Arthur is located in a quite alley close to the city centre. Just a few steps from the main entrance cars are rushing on the crowded street, but visiting the hotel is like finding a peaceful oasis in the middle of the buzzing city. The building itself is from 1882 and one still feels the presence of history when entering the cosy rooms. The ambience is informal and laid-back; it’s clear that this is a hotel suited for families and couples who just want to unwind for a day or two.
The first thing you notice when entering the reception is the arrangement of soft couches, a crackling fire and a knight’s armour shining in the corner of the room. The name of the hotel is definitely reflected in the interior. The 155 rooms are decorated a little different from each other, but all offer free wifi and complimentary coffee/tea.
We checked in to a 32 m2 Junior suite with a king size bed, a large bathroom and a view to the court yard. Now, when thinking of a Junior suite a large room with plenty of space usually comes to mind. In this case, the room isn’t very big, but it still contains all the necessities for a weekend stay. However, we still recommend opting for one of the suites if you need more space – or even better, the Spa Executive suite with a private jacuzzi.
Oriental spa in Copenhagen
On the ground floor of the hotel guests will find the popular Ni’mat Spa, which offers 850 m2 of pure pampering! Ni’mat is decorated as an Oriental paradise with wooden details, gold ornaments and spicy scents filling the air, and it’s definitely one of the main attractions of this hotel. It’s one of the breathing spaces of the city where locals and tourists alike can enjoy a day of wellness and complete serenity. The heart of the spa is the water temple, which offers a jacuzzi, a sauna, aroma steam bath, cold water bath and of course a relaxation area with fresh water and magazines. Last, but not least guests can enjoy a wellness treatment in one of the treatment rooms.
Culinary highlights
Due to the ideal location of the hotel, it’s possible to find several good restaurants in the area. Kong Arthur has connections to an Italian restaurant as well as a Spanish and a Japanese, and they’re all located less than hundred meters from the hotel.
With hungry stomachs and big expectations we visited the popular tapas place called ‘Pintxos’ to explore a bite of Spain’s culinary traditions – and it showed to be more than just a regular restaurant! Packed rooms with wooden tables and candle lights and singing waiters made up the ambience while we indulged in a glass of Cava. My companion chose a large fish plate while I opted for 3 classic tapas delicacies; dates wrapped in bacon, marinated chorizo and foie gras with peach garnish (more French than Spanish!) While I could have spared the last-mentioned, the two first dishes were absolutely delicious!
Another culinary highlight was the hotel’s breakfast buffet. Three words describes it pretty well: quality, sustainability and wholesome. A nice selection of home-baked bread, smoothies, juices, cold cuts and fruit bowls dominated the buffet and it was just about everything you needed to kick off a new day! The best part? One doesn’t need to be a guest at the hotel to indulge in the delicacies, but make sure to book a table in advance if you’re not!
Our stay at Hotel Kong Arthur was a pleasant surprise. Not luxury in its traditional form and a little scratched here and there, but still an obvious choice for families and couples in search of that everyday pampering. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the location very convenient for the city centre.
