How to create a “boutique hotel feeling” in your own home

boutique hotel feeling at home

I’ve always had a fascination for boutique hotels; Independent, smaller hotels emphasising art, design and aesthetics. So, in this post, I’m going to show you a few ways in which you can decorate your home like one. With these hand-selected items, you can be sure to implement that everyday luxury feeling that boutique hotels are so famous for.

First things first; coffee.

Most of us appreciate a good cup of coffee in the morning (who’s with me here?!), and so, the right equipment to make it is crucial. Coffee brewing is an art form, but you can easily create the goodness yourself, for example by using this beauty from Nespresso. I can easily imagine it in a well-designed hotel room – waiting for you when you wake up, and whenever you need a break during the day.

Wondering what to serve your freshly-brewed coffee (or tea) in? I’ve found the perfect china made by WEDGWOOD. I could literally stock up my entire kitchen with these cups! Click here to get them.

Get the lights right.

In my mind, a boutique hotel is synonymous with a warm and cosy atmosphere. The easiest way to get that is through proper lighting and candles. Pick something out of the ordinary that supports your personality. This version from Urban Outfitters has an industrial yet classic look that I really like.

If you’re more into candles, and preferably scented ones, I can recommend looking into Jo Malone. They don’t just create amazing perfumes and body products, but also candles that last for a long time. This classic version will fit well into almost any environment.

Do you prefer colours and patterns over a clean and minimalistic look? Then I think you’d like this candle from WEDGWOOD. Bright and yellow and full of pretty flowers – it’s definitely a mood booster for your livingroom or bedroom!

Put a scent on it

It should come as no surprise that scents have an effect on your mood and overall well-being. Lavender, for example, is known for its soothing and healing qualities that reduces stress and anxiety – something we could all use these days, right? Add a bit of that in your bedroom, for example in the shape of this hand cream from Kiehl’s, and feel the effect as you drift off to sleep.

To get that hotel feeling at home, you can also add a bit of pillow mist in the evening. I like this one from NEOM made from 100% natural ingredients. Spray, lay back, inhale; the chamomile and cedar wood will instantly make you feel relaxed.

A diffuser is another thing I’ve only recently started using myself in my home. My current favourite one is this one from Jo Malone. Scented with peony and blush suede, it’ll create a wonderful environment in e.g. your living room. Oh, and it matches perfectly with the above-mentioned candle!

Last, but not least, you can create your own signature scent by using an aromatic room spray. Try this one from Aesop with pink pepper, lavender and tobacco. It’s the closest you’ll get to a boutique hotel feeling at home!

Sleep in style

What characterises a really good hotel? I’m guessing most would agree that a comfy bed and soft linens are on top of the list! And hardly anything beats a good night’s sleep – or breakfast in a soft bed, right?

With that in mind, you’d need a) a really good bed and b) beautiful covers and linens. I can help you with last-mentioned!

I recently came across a brand called Tommy Bahama – an American company producing clothing, accessories and bedding inspired by a tropic island lifestyle. They had me at that sentence!
Adorned with pineapples, palm leaves, exotic flowers and fruits, their bed linen and blankets in pure cotton will send you straight off to paradise and create a boutique hotel feeling at the same time. I love this, this and this.
If soft blankets is what you’re looking for, take a look at these in creamy earth colours.

Bathroom delights

Creating your own private wellness haven at home is not as difficult as it may sound. There are many things you can do to create a ‘wellness hotel feeling’ in your bathroom – for example, by investing in a few quality bath products, luxurious towels and sleek design items.

I recently discovered The Laundress – an American brand producing non-toxic laundry- and home cleaning products. Take a look at their Classic Signature Detergent, which whitens, brightens and preserves colour while removing stains. It lasts for up to 64 washes and leaves your towels and laundry with a fresh, crisp smell. On top of that, their Fabric Fresh Spray quickly freshens up your fabrics, whether it’s drapers, carpets or linens.

The best boutique hotels I’ve stayed in, offers interesting design – and that goes for the bathrooms as well. Add a touch of glamour to your everyday rituals with this golden soap dispenser, cotton jar and tumbler in brass.

If you, like me, have a thing with the colour combination of gold and turquoise, you can pair the above-mentioned products with this Ocean Reef Shower Curtain from Michael Aram.

Finish off with this Rose Shower Gel from the cult fragrance house, Le Labo. You’ll smell like roses while your skin is deeply nourished with olive leaves, aloe vera and vitamin E.
